A Brief History of Nissan Motors

    Last updated 6 years ago

Like many automotive companies, Nissan Motors was founded by a daring young entrepreneur prior to World War II. With a reputation for building elegant, functional, and fun vehicles, Nissan passed Honda in 2011 to become the second most popular auto manufacturer in Japan. Take a look back through the history of the Nissan Motors Company to trace the rise of one of today’s most prominent automobile manufacturers:

    The Beginnings

Nissan was founded in 1933 from the conglomeration of the Nikon Sangyo Company and the Tobata Imono Company in Yokohama. At this stage in Nissan’s history, the company produced Datsuns, and 20,000 of them rolled of the assembly line in 1935.  The company was led by Yoshisuke Aikawa, who oversaw the production and operations of manufacturing.

     Post-War Revival

After the relative setbacks caused by World War II, the Nissan company revived itself by producing some of its most legendary models. An all-purpose vehicle that outperformed the American Jeep of the period, the Patrol, debuted in 1951 and was relatively successful. In 1958, the Datsun 210 won the Mobil Gas Round Australia Trial, catapulting the company into the spotlight.

    The European Market

During the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Nissan began aggressively marketing their vehicles in the European market. This era saw the creation of some of the most popular Datsuns ever, including the Gloria and the Skyline. In 1969, the first 240Z rolled off assembly lines. Its heritage lives on in the Nissan sport coupes that bear the familiar Z badge.

    Globalizing the Company

In recent years, the success of Nissan can be attributed to their powerful standing in North American market. Reliability, capability, and fun are characteristics American drivers love, and as a result, Nissan and its varied lineup of over 20 vehicles are here to stay.
